Going longer

"Well we're scared but we ain't shakin,
Kinda bent, but we ain't breakin,
In the long run,
Oh I want to tell you, it's a long run."

The Eagles.

First off thanks for the condolences for my puppy Boomer.

I've started trying to up my distance and it seems to be working. I upped my weekly runs and I extended my weekend run. I skipped my weekend trail run but I ran a short trail run at the old dump. It wasn't a total trail run. The dump started out life as a quarry. While I was growing up it was the city landfill site. So I thought it was kinda funny, the candy wrappers and chip bag of my youth became the literal foundation on which I was running. A fitting life cycle for junk food. I sent Matt from the Dumprunners Club my application to be an official Dumprunner.

On the weekend I decided to run the canal path since it has marked KM's. I planned to run 14K, the longest distance I have run since September when I hurt my knee. I started out and the first 2K hurt like crazy and I thought it might be a short day. The first part of my run was a 6K out and back and I was thinking we'll see how I feel when my van was in sight. As with usual, by the time I was completing the 6th KM I was feeling pretty good. So I commenced on my 2nd out and back. I finished my 14K and I feel good.

I guess my goal of a 1/2 marathon on May 10th is VERY possible. My pace is pretty slow even compared to my slow pace of last year. I was wondering about the hotel and if they have late checkout. I called them and they have a special deal set up with the race director so checkout time is 3:00pm. I have no worries now, London (Ontario) here I come.

This week was March break so I took a couple of days off to be at home with the family. We decided to do some touristy things. We went to the Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls on Friday and took a run down to Niagara on the Lake. I love walking around the downtown. It is a nice quiet time of year to visit.

On Saturday, my daughter and I went on the Sky Wheel in Niagara Falls. It gives you a great view of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and of course the most spectacular the Canadian Horseshoe Falls.

From up here you can see the beauty of the Falls

and the tackiness of Niagara Falls.

On the diet front, I still am holding my own. I am not losing any, but I am not gaining any. I actually am gaining and losing but it is the same 2lbs. over and over again. I am still in the game.

Keep fighting.

Do I call you the "dump runner" now? haha
14K is a GREAT run for not running as much lately.
I've never been to Niagara Falls before, but I heard it is beautiful and will go one day.

The Falls are great, all roads leading to it are tacky as you can get. Once you leave Niagara Falls there is a lot of nice areas to visit.

Sounds like you're ready for the spring half! London is such a nice place for running too.

Love the pics :)

Hey big guy!
If you really want to loose a lot of weight you gotta try "Over Distance Training". Try training 15K slow for a 10K race.
You are a slow runner that is perfect, run slow and smooth but make it 120 minutes or more three times a week.
Soon you will be knocking off the 10K in sub 60, then the longer stuff.
Train longer than your race. The ODT system really works!
